In February 2019, NFU Scotland launched a new awareness-raising campaign to tackle the blight of irresponsible access by dog walkers in Scotland’s countryside.
The ‘Control Your Dog on Farmland’ campaign will run for 12 months and will focus on livestock worrying as well as on the increasing problem of dog fouling which can cause livestock to contract dangerous diseases. The national campaign ties in with key partners and complement other work that the Union has played an integral role in, including the Scottish Partnership Against Rural Crime’s recently launched campaign. Livestock worrying and dog fouling are two of the biggest issues that farmers, crofters and landowners face through irresponsible access by dog owners. The key messages are aimed at farmers and dog owners and include:

We have been informed by South Lanarkshire Council that, due to the mainly negative feedback to the proposal to instal a cycle shelter on the High Street, they have decided not to install a shelter in Biggar at this time.
They advise further that, notwithstanding this, the Council have a requirement to encourage sustainable travel within the Council area and the introduction of cycle parking shelters in previous years have attracted cyclists to various locations. The funding for the shelter was received from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport specifically for the provision of on-street cycle parking facilities and Biggar was chosen as there are various cycle routes in the vicinity of the town which are used by a number of cyclists. SLC have advised that they would like to consider introducing a shelter in Biggar in the future should funding of this nature become available. BCC has responded by suggesting that a public consultation is held before any such decision is made in the future and BCC would be happy to lead on any such consultation if appropriate. We have been asked to share this grant funding opportunity with our community.:

The July/August 2019 voting period will feature projects with a Health and Wellbeing theme, and projects focussing on cancer, heart disease and diabetes will be prioritised. Applications are assessed by Groundwork to ensure they are eligible. Tesco colleagues will shortlist the projects to determine which go forward to the customer vote. The revised forms should streamline the process and make decision making a little easier. Look at our website for more information and guidance if you or your organisation would like to apply for funding for a community focussed project. South Lanarkshire Council has informed us that the shelter they intend to install will be 3m in length and the canopy will be 2.5m in width. The shelter will house 3 cycle stands which will allow 6 cycles to be secured.
Below are two images of the same shelter in situ in Carluke. It should be noted however that the Carluke shelter is slightly larger, measuring 3.6m in length. We have been advised by South Lanarkshire Council that they intend to install a cycle parking shelter at the location shown on the plan below.
South Lanarkshire Council states that is "...committed to improving sustainable travel links throughout the Council area. As part of the drive to encourage cycling as a feasible mode of transport we intend to introduce cycle parking shelters in various towns and villages in South Lanarkshire to allow cyclists to secure their cycle and use the local facilities. This year’s programme will see the introduction of 5 on-street shelters" SLC has located the shelter where they believe it will cause minimal inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists while still being accessible for cyclists. |
