Thursday 21 December 2023 Self-Care Tips for Managing Minor Illnesses at Home As winter settles in with its inevitable seasonal viruses, Lanarkshire residents are reminded that sometimes, the road to recovery begins right at home. For those experiencing minor illnesses or less serious injuries, self-care can be the key to a swift recovery. Self-care advice is available via NHS Lanarkshire’s new online Winter Health Hub, an online resource designed to help Lanarkshire residents access a wide range of healthcare services this winter. Dr Chris Deighan for NHS Lanarkshire, said: "In many cases, minor illnesses can be effectively managed at home. “By understanding your symptoms and having the right medications in your medicine cabinet, you can enable yourself to recover comfortably at home, without the need for a GP or Out of Hours appointment. “NHS Inform has a lots of handy resources in the form of self-help guides. These guides use a set of questions similar to those posed by GP or NHS 24 call handlers to gauge the severity of health concerns. “It has guides on a range of common ailments, including sore throats, cold, cough, flu, earache, abdominal pain, rashes, backache and headaches.” A well-stocked medicine cabinet is helpful in managing minor illnesses. Advice can also be sought from Community Pharmacies, which can be a great first port of call for healthcare advice and treatments for many common minor clinical conditions, without the need for a prescription. The Pharmacy First Service can also see your pharmacist support you with minor conditions such as coughs and colds, sore throats, upset stomachs, constipation and diarrhoea. Details of all pharmacies open throughout the festive period can be found on NHS Lanarkshire’s Winter Health Hub. Items to include in your medicine cabinet include paracetamol, hydration sachets for managing diarrhoea, sickness tablets to alleviate vomiting and indigestion remedies such as antacids. Other useful over the counter medications include mild laxatives for constipation and medications suitable for children. Dr Deighan added: “While self-care is effective for many minor illnesses, it's crucial to recognise when additional health care is needed. “If symptoms persist without improvement or worsen over time, consider seeking further advice by consulting your community pharmacist, contacting your GP or calling NHS24 on 111 when your GP practice is closed.” To access the Winter Health Hub and view GP and Pharmacy opening times, visit: https://www.nhslanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk/your-health/winter-health/ Fiona O’Dowd Senior Communications and FOI Officer Kirklands HQ Fallside Road Bothwell G71 8BB

to Communities Good Afternoon, Please see below recent press release from South Lanarkshire Council urging you to have your say on upcoming savings options, where we would appreciate your time to have your say on the various proposals. View the survey here: Budget Consultation 24-25 Thanks, Everyone is urged to have their say on savings options under consideration to balance the council’s budget. There are 42 specific options that could help bridge South Lanarkshire Council’s £20.7 million projected budget gap for 2024-25. They have been put up for discussion by council officers, ahead of Elected Members having to agree a budget, which is likely to happen in the New Year. Council Leader Joe Fagan said: “Make no mistake – no-one wants to see cuts to council services. But councillors of all political groups are going to have to make some difficult decisions, because the simple fact is that we are no longer getting the funding we need to continue to do all the good work we want to. “What’s important now is that we hear the views of local residents and service users. More than 2,000 people have already taken part in an initial budget consultation and now we hope they will tell us what they think about the specific savings options that are now on the table.” With £3.3m in savings already identified from management and operational measures, the 42 additional options highlight £15.3m potential further savings across community and enterprise, housing, social work, education and finance and corporate resources. Local authorities are waiting for details of funding that will be available to deliver the Scottish Government’s planned Council Tax freeze and how that might also help bridge the budget gap. In total a shortfall of £95.8m has been identified for the council over the next four years. The new survey can be found online. You can also take part by emailing the team or posting responses to Budget Consultation, Floor 4, South Lanarkshire Council, Almada Street, Hamilton ML3 0AA. Paper copies of the survey can be requested via the same email and postal address. The survey will remain open until midnight on Friday 12 January 2024. Community Engagement Team Communications and Strategy Service, Community Engagement Section Floor 1, South Lanarkshire Council Headquarters, Beckford Street, Hamilton ML3 0AA Phone: 0303 123 1017 Press Release: New winter health hub to help direct patients to most appropriate care
A new Winter Health Hub has been launched, designed to help Lanarkshire residents access a wide range of healthcare services this winter. The online hub provides a centralised portal, outlining the healthcare options available to help people to seek the right care in the right place. The website gives a guide to the healthcare support available throughout winter as well as details of pharmacy and GP opening times over the festive period. It also directs to support available for mental health, the cost of living and weather and travel advice. Dr John Keaney, acute medical director for NHS Lanarkshire, said: “As we enter winter and approach the festive period, it is important that everyone is familiar with the wide range of NHS services that are available to them. “If you are unwell, you can access healthcare advice in many ways. It’s important to go for the right care in the right place whether that be seeking advice on NHS Inform, by contacting your pharmacist or seeking help out of hours via NHS 24. “For those who do not have a serious condition, there are lots of other healthcare options across Lanarkshire to choose from which can provide you with the most appropriate care in the quickest time. “Anyone needing care for a serious condition should always call 999 or attend one of our emergency departments. Serious conditions include signs of heart attack, stroke, heavy bleeding and difficulty breathing. “ People requiring urgent care for a condition that isn’t life-threatening should call NHS 24 on 111 first – day or night – before attending A&E. NHS 24 will assess you by telephone and refer you to the right care, delivered by the right healthcare professional, as close to home as possible. This could include self-care at home or advice on the most appropriate care such pharmacy, optician, dentist, GP or minor injuries unit. Lauren Gibson, Lead Pharmacist for Community Pharmacy Services, said: “The winter hub outlines who you can reach out to for illnesses and ailments. Your local pharmacy can treat a variety of minor common conditions without a prescription through its Pharmacy First Service, and its Pharmacy First Plus Service. Minor conditions pharmacies can help with include coughs and colds, sore throats, constipation, indigestion, urine infections, minor skin infections, minor eye infections, emergency hormonal contraception and access to urgent supplies of medication you take regularly that you may have run short of. Please speak to your Pharmacist.” GP practices in Lanarkshire continue to offer phone, video and in-person consultations, so anyone with health concerns they believe requires the input of a GP should contact their GP practice .
