We have been informed by South Lanarkshire Council that, due to the mainly negative feedback to the proposal to instal a cycle shelter on the High Street, they have decided not to install a shelter in Biggar at this time.
They advise further that, notwithstanding this, the Council have a requirement to encourage sustainable travel within the Council area and the introduction of cycle parking shelters in previous years have attracted cyclists to various locations. The funding for the shelter was received from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport specifically for the provision of on-street cycle parking facilities and Biggar was chosen as there are various cycle routes in the vicinity of the town which are used by a number of cyclists. SLC have advised that they would like to consider introducing a shelter in Biggar in the future should funding of this nature become available. BCC has responded by suggesting that a public consultation is held before any such decision is made in the future and BCC would be happy to lead on any such consultation if appropriate.
